Teaching

Ashley Lindsey is a New York City–based educator, mentor, and artistic coach who is deeply invested in cultivating the next generation of dance artists.

His teaching philosophy is grounded in curiosity, rigor, and a deep commitment to developing the whole artist. His students have gone on to attend elite institutions including The Juilliard School, Boston Conservatory, Arts Umbrella, the USC Kaufman School of Dance, and the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA), and to build successful careers with major dance companies, on Broadway, and throughout the commercial dance industry.

Upon graduating from UNCSA in 2007, Ashley was invited to join the Limón Dance Company and later performed with the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company. He began returning to his alma mater as guest faculty in 2011, and in 2019 was appointed Artistic Director of the Summer Dance Intensive by then–Dean of Dance Susan Jaffe, a post he held through 2025. During his tenure he founded Dance | Connection Now, a pre-professional summer training program; launched the UNCSA Performance Project; and established the UNCSA Choreographic Institute. He joined the School of Dance faculty in 2021 and, during a two-year appointment as Visiting Professor, was nominated for the school's Teaching Excellence Award.

Class

A contemporary class anchored in the principles of the Limón technique, contemporary movement research, and improvisation modalities. Class begins by establishing the connection between mind and body through a series of somatic practices, then transitions into technical exercises designed to enhance mobility and stability, with a focus on alignment and the practical use of weight and gravity. Following this, dancers move into full-body phrase work that encourages both technical precision and personal artistic expression.

Residencies

Ashley approaches each residency and teaching engagement with an artist-centered focus. Whether working in the university, conservatory, or studio setting, his goal is the same: to bridge the gap between training and the professional world, giving dancers the tools, perspective, and confidence to take the next step.
